Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

Long-legged shorebird. Brown on back and head, white breast and belly with two black bands on breast. Tail is rusty red in flight. Red eye ring.

Habitat:

Look for this bird in open areas, often nesting in short grass and areas of gravel. I've found them nesting on gravel roads and driveways and once on the nearly flat, gravel-covered school roof.
