Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens

Description:

Small woodpecker with a white back, head and undersides. Black crown, eye mask and stripe from bill to side of neck. Black wings with white bars and white tail with black barring. Red patch on back of crown is an adult male. Short bill. Similar to the Hairy Woodpecker. Though the Hairy is larger with a longer thicker bill and an all white tail with no barring.

Habitat:

Mix woodlands. This one was spotted near a lake in an public park.

Thank you Jemma. I turned around while taking pictures of ducks and there it was in a tree about 20ft from me.
