Hexastylis virginica
Low growing (prostrate) plant. Beautiful, deeply lobed leaves (somewhat heart-shaped). Dark green with light mottling. The leaves are somewhat stiff and remain green year round (evergreen). It flowers in the spring through early summer. The flowers are reddish-brown and jug shaped. They grow near the ground rather than on an erect stalk.
Temperate forest. Rockwood Park, Virginia.
I am hoping to spot these in bloom this spring!
