Cactus Weevil

Cactophagus spinolae

Description:

Weevil of about 22mm body length. Black in colour with two red spots behind the head and two more on the sides of thorax; elytra have two yellow lines, with the first continuing on the underside of the animal.

Habitat:

Found feeding on a prickly pear leaf in semi-arid area, after 1st strong rains of rainy season.

Notes:

Locally called "Picudo de Nopal" and considered a pest, as they can damage the prickly pear quite severely, who's leaves (nopales) are a staple food in Mexico.
