Dendrocygna javanica
The Lesser Whistling Duck is a species of duck that breeds in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They are nocturnal feeders and during the day may be found in flocks around lakes and wet paddy fields. This is a rather small duck, with striking chestnut brown colours and an elegant long-neck.
A large pond in the Singapore Botanic garden.
Although common elsewhere, Lesser Whistling ducks are threatened in Singapore, where there would appear to be no more than 200 left in Singapore. They are threatened by habitat loss, disturbance and poaching. Fortunately, they appear to take readily to suitable habitats, even those which are man-made (e.g., park ponds such in this case).
