Greenbrier

Smilax

Description:

The thorns on this native plant make it very annoying when one is trudging through the woods. The thorns can be so sharp and strong that they can pierce the thick soles of walking shoes. However, it is a beneficial plant for wildlife. When it forms thickets, it provides shelter for birds and other animals; in winter, the berries are a form of sustenance for multiple species. Humans also have used it for food and drinks.

Habitat:

Santee Coastal Reserve Wildlife Management Area
