Spined Micrathena

Micrathena gracilis

Description:

A Spined Micranthena building a web. This is a female (males do not spin webs). She has an amber body and sports a large abdomen with ten spines (two rows of 5 spines each).

Habitat:

Came across this spider building it's web an hour or so after dawn in a forgotten corner of the yard. This corner is a shady, wooded area. The large, round web was being constructed about 3 feet from the ground. She will de-construct it again when night falls

Notes:

While she was happily spinning her web when I first came along (image #2), my stretching and craning about (trying to not fall into the poison ivy patch) finally disturbed her so much that she ran first to the center of the unfinished web (images #3 & #4) and then across the "escape line" they build into webs (image #1 & #5).
