Greater Roadrunner

Geococcyx californianus

Description:

From the Cuckoo family.
Shaggy blue-black crest with fleshy red behind the eyes. Thick bill and a long tail. Body color is dark brown fringed with a sandy color. Belly is also a sandy color. Spends most of it's time on the ground finding it's meal of lizards, snakes and small mammals and birds. When it runs it leans over so the body is even with the ground and uses it's tail as a rudder. These birds can run about 25mph when chasing it's prey. This one was found near a wetlands area and posed for a few minutes before it took off into the tangle of bush and trees.

Habitat:

Mostly found deserts of the southwest. This one found it's home in the wetland park along the Colorado river
