Alaska moose

Alces alces gigas

Description:

This female moose (cow) took a dip to cross a body of freshwater in the late evening. This behavior allows her to decrease her body temperature to get comfortable on summer days as well as wash away some of the flies that may be on/near her. She continued dining on vegetation after swimming to the other side.

Habitat:

Alpine landscape dotted with spruce trees (photos 5, 6) in the foothills of mountains.

Notes:

July in Alaska brings 19+ hours of sunlight per day. These photos were taken maybe a couple of hours before midnight, and the sun hadn't yet set, which resulted in lovely light.
