Common Whitetail dragonfly (female, oviposition, in flight)

Libellula lydia, Plathemis lydia

Description:

A three-image time series, shown in reverse chronological order, showing a female Common Whitetail dragonfly laying eggs by the process of oviposition. The female dragonfly skims the water repeatedly (see Photos 1 and 3), picking up drops of water that are used to flick fertilized eggs toward the shore (see Photo 1). The process typically lasts a few seconds to a few minutes. Tech Tips: I used a shutter speed of 1,300 second in order to capture still photos of the dragonfly in flight.

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
