Melanargia sp.
Melanargia is a genus of butterflies of the subfamily Satyrinae tribe Satyrini subtribe Melanargiina belonging to the family Nymphalidae. The adults of this genus of satyrines are easily distinguished by their white wings with black veins and markings (hence the common name ‘Marbled Whites’). A peculiar phenotypic distinctiveness is also a dilated vein 12 at the base of the forewing.
Butterflies of genus Melanargia are widespread from Europe and north Africa to Japan. [edit]

A 5th grader whose father is a wildlife artist who breeds butterflies. She already has a wealth of knowledge...
Melanargia galathea (Marbled white) or Melanargia lachesis (Iberian Marbled white). They can both occur in the south of France. Someone may know of underwing criteria to differentiate them. The principal difference between the two is "the presence or absence of extensive black basal markings on the uppersides". http://www.eurobutterflies.com/species_p...
