A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Diapheromera velii velii, (Walsh, 1864)
The walkingsticks were very common on this one species of grass at the LBJ national grasslands in Wise county Texas, which is a great prairie habitat for this species of walkingstick. The walkingstick has six legs and a body which perfectly was hidden between the grasses, but some specimens found were green and mixed green and grey like this one. The length was about four inches with extremely long antennae which were very thin.
LBJ national grassland,Wise county. Was found in a grassy prairie habitat along some gravel making the grass sandy. They seem to feed on this grass because there were multiple ones in a small area of space.
The specimen in the photograph was a male. The walkingsticks are clumsy walkers and fall very often stumbling onto the ground.
