Northern water snakes

Nerodia sipedon sipedon

Description:

I found these round-eyed, dark-colored snakes lying on small rock islands in the shallow water. The snakes were nearly imperceptible at first, well camouflaged in the leaf litter. They emerged only to bask together in the afternoon sun. Some individuals were 3 feet in length.

Habitat:

Spotted in Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, a large freshwater wetland.

Notes:

April begins mating season for water snakes. Initially, I thought there were just two, but later noticed a third and fourth pair of eyes underneath another snake’s body and the leaves.

Yes, water snakes are considered ill-tempered. It was a treat to see them gathered in one spot. Thank you, Tukup!

Very similar to the water snakes (Helicops) that we have in Ecuador. And just as ill-tempered. Nice catch to see several at once Mauna. Thanks for sharing.
