Smells sweetish at the buds up top like an herb or veggie but leaves taste very bitter n it's growing tall n has yellow flowering little green buds up top? Help? What is it?

I believe you have lettuce that has bolted in the summer heat and is going to seed.
My daughter is named savannah-sky
But we bought it and planted them... Ha ha looks like a weed tho!!!
I dont know what this is but I ripped mine out after they hit 6ft tall! My elderly neighbour, who is a gardening expert says its a "weed".
