Green Heron

Butorides virescens

Description:

The smallest heron residing on Dominica. This beautiful bird is greenish-blue on the head, a rusty red on the throat and chest. It also has a white line of feathers from the throat down to the abdomen.

Habitat:

This little guy was quietly sitting on the rock in the river near the Melville Hall Airport.

Notes:

After I started taking photos of it sitting quietly on the rock, I was lucky to watch it start hunting (the last 3 pics). By the time I had to leave though, nothing had been caught. The Green Heron also graced a 10c stamp in Dominica! http://colnect.com/en/stamps/stamp/43325... Very cool :) First reference for identification: "Dominica's Birds", p49, Arlington James, Stephen Durand, and Bertrand Jno. Baptiste.
