Golden Wattle

Acacia pycnantha

Description:

This is the national flower of Australia. Large leathery phylodes are distinctive of this Acacia. They flower in massive inflorescences of bright yellow pompoms. They flower in mid winter, triggered by the day length increasing and giving people an early welcome to the emerging springtime. Yeehaa

Habitat:

Primarily an inland species, this drought resistant acacia has become widespread and prolific

Notes:

In only 1988 when Australia celebrated our bicentenial (of European settlement, even though people have lived here for 40 - 50,000 years) this Golden Wattle was selected for our national flower. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petiole_(bo...)
