Trabala pallida
About 5cm wingspan. On an island off the east coast of Malaysia. Bright yellow with beautiful markings.
I think there are bugs in the Project Noah Android app! I distinctively added the name but somehow, it didn't appear. Fixed it on my computer now. The specific features you mentioned are very interesting! I can only look it up when I'm not on the move. Thank you for your explanation! :)
Pamela, could you add the scientific name as well? Many other moths have the same common name, so Project Noah uses the scientific name to classify organisms, and when a scientific name is not present, the organism is considered unknown. This can be distinguished from the Rose Myrtle Lappet Moth, Trabala vishnou, because T. vishnou does not have the two brown markings on the hindwings near the head as this spotting does. Also, the two dots don't touch the main brown spot in the middle, both are characteristics of Trabala pallida.
Thank you, jgorneau, for the suggestion! Indeed it should be it! The islanders would have a spring of caterpillars that cause great itch should anyone come into contact with them.
Nice find! This is a female. Here is another link: http://www.malaeng.com/blog/?p=5898
You may want some locals to confirm, though!
