Polistes dominula
This boldly-striped yellow and black wasp is a ground-nesting social species. They are nearly hairless and are approximately 1 cm (.5 in) in length. Can sting repeatedly.
This insect resembles the North American species of yellow jackets, which they often replace as their population spreads.

Thanks for the kind comments. Allice, the first introduction I had to yellowjackets is when I stepped on a nest. I was stung a bunch of times before I managed to outrun the highly disturbed wasps. Fortunately, I'm not very sensitive to bee and wasp stings.
Lovely shots!
Lovely series!
My daughter had to take shots after she had a reaction in stumbling onto a nest. Really detailed good pictures!
