European honey bee

Apis mellifera

Description:

The honeybee is widespread across Europe, Asia and Africa. These little insects have played a huge role in the history of civilization, and even today we are completely dependent upon their existence. Their role as pollinators is critical for the majority of the worlds food crops. A role that has received significant media attention over the past years due to the dramatic decline in the bee populations across the continents, first recorded in 2006. Aside from being pollinators, honey bees produce honey from flower nectar, making them popular to keep, a century old practice. Honey bees are not able to survive as individuals but live as colonies, often referred to as superorganisms.

Notes:

There is such an incredible amount of information available on honey bees. I recommend looking at the wikipedia link for more details.
