Spotted Datana Moth

Datana perspicua

Description:

About 22mm long

Habitat:

Mostly rural area. Found on the outside of a lighted building, just after sunrise.

Notes:

Probably the coolest moth I've seen this year. Looks like a cigarette butt mimic.

The more I compare images, the more I'm convinced it's D. perspicua. There is a single image at BugGuide under D. ministria that looks identical. I'm starting to think that image is in the wrong place in the guide.

Good question. I would send to BAMONA, and see if they can confirm it for you. it is usually good to bring experts in for the tough genera, and Datana is definitely one of them!

Yes, I've just found it in Datana, but how to distinguish between Spotted and Yellow-necked?

The two spots suggest Spotted Datana.
