Digger Wasp

Description:

It has a yellow strip across the front of the thorax, yellow spots on the rear of the thorax and bold yellow bands across the abdomen. An adult grows as big as one and a half inches long.

Habitat:

Spotted near the Tamarac Chippewa Picnic Area on Hwy 26. Digger wasps are named for their digging behavior as they prefer to dig a tunnel in the dirt. Their nests are usually in twigs in wooded areas.

Notes:

Digger wasps fly low to the ground to find food and eat pollen in the spring as flowers begin to bloom.They also eat small insects and larvae.
