Red Squirrel

Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Description:

The red squirrel has a heavy winter coat with orange-red on the back and sides, and in winter there are tufts of fur on the ears.

Habitat:

The red squirrel ranges from the northeastern United States and eastern Canada west to Alaska and south into the Rockies. It is a common squirrel of Minnesota's coniferous forest and is also found in mixed forest and in some northern deciduous forest.

Notes:

This red squirrel was spotted at the Chippewa Picnic Area on Hwy 26.
