Description:

Description: Slimy-tacky, purple cap becoming yellow-spotted around or in center, with purplish gills becoming rust. Cap: 1-2" (2.5-5 cm) wide; bell-shaped to convex; slimy to tacky, smooth, dark purplish, becoming paler, yellow-spotted or yellowish at center. Gills: attached, close, moderately broad; violet, becoming grayish-cinnamon. Stalk: 2-3" (5-7.5 cm) long, 1/4-3/8" (0.5-1 cm) thick, sometimes enlarged below; slimy-tacky, solid, purplish. Veil: partial veil cobwebby, pale violet, evanescent. Spores: 8-12 x 5-6.5 u; elliptical, minutely roughened, brownish. Spore print rust. Edibility: Edible. Season: August-September. Habitat: Several to many, under deciduous trees in low woods. Range: Widespread in E. North America; reported in Olympic Mountains. Discussion: Although this is edible, like most corts it looks better than it tastes.
