Painted Lady

Vanessa cardui

Description:

A rather large butterfly (for the UK!), it has a wingspan of up to 7cm. It is brightly coloured with orange, black and white on its wings, though the undersides are a little duller with just a small splash of colour. They are actually migrant butterflies, coming to the UK from the European continent. They don't spend any part of the winter here as it's too cold.

Habitat:

Very versatile, can be found anywhere from the seaside to town parks. I found this one on a Buddleja bush next to a little pond in the middle of a meadow.

Notes:

Found this on my way to work, it was difficult to get a good picture because the bush is behind a wooden fence and my jeans don't really allow for good climbing! So I had to lean over the fence to get a good picture, this was the only one in focus haha. These butterflies can be seen in the UK all the way up to October.
