Giant King Fisher

Megaceryle Maximus

Description:

A giant of a bird compared to the other members of the kinfishers in the region and sports a giant dark bill. This is a male, with its very defining dark coat with white dots and a brown chest. Females are less striking with a brown belly as aposed to a brown chest. It was a cold overcast day so sadly the light dose not do this beautiful bird justice. Still, it was a nice sight out in the open sitting on the side of a bridge over a small river. They prefer to hunt from an exposed perch which makes them great for photos. They are Manogonus and mate for life.

Habitat:

Prefers woodland areas over a fast flowing stream where it can catch its favourite food which is crabs. Very territorial and maintains its own stretch of river or coastal lagoon year round

Notes:

Large bill used in catching and eating crabs
