Black Bean Aphid

Aphis fabae

Description:

According to Wikipedia's article on Black Bean Aphids, many adults are Aptates (wingless). Those which have wings are called Alates. The article goes on to explain that the Alates are longer and more slender than Aptates and have shiny black heads. The adults in my photos are not slender and appear to have dark brownish heads. So, I think it is reasonable to assume that they are Aptates.

Habitat:

This Aphis fabae infestation was spotted in our backyard vegetable plot on String Beans (Vigna unguiculata) locally known as Sitaw. Plant information from - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Sitaw.html

Notes:

The Wikipedia article (link shown in my references) is full of interesting information about the fascinating life of these aphids and is really worth reading.
