California Black Bear

Ursus americanus californiensis

Description:

This cinnamon colored Black Bear cub was running across a field and went into a wooded area. It briefly climbed a tree before climbing back down. The mother was not seen (which was concerning) but the cub kept looking back towards another wooded area. Black bears can have a variation of coloring depending on the subspecies from white to cinnamon to silver to black. Black bears are the only bear in California.

Habitat:

Evergreen forest at high elevation in Yosemite National Park.

Notes:

My first bear spotting :-)

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
