Grey Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Winter fur is dense and silvery grey with a brown tinge along the middle of the back. Summer fur is yellowish-brown. This individual looks half and half. The front half is grey but the hind half looks whitish or silvery. Is it moulting?

Habitat:

Garden. Urban residential area.

Notes:

Native to North America, grey squirrels were first introduced to the UK in the 19th century. The species has spread rapidly and is now common across the UK. Greys compete with red squirrels for food and also carry a virus known as squirrelpox. While they are immune to the disease, they transmit it to the reds, for whom it is fatal.
