Ringed Plover

Charadrius hiaticula

Description:

A small, short-legged wader easily identified by the rich brown and white plumage, and the black bands around its head. The similar little ringed plover is distinguished by the fact it has a yellow border to the eyes. They move very fast on their little legs, very cute little things.

Habitat:

Normally found on beaches or sand/gravel pits, this guy was found wading through the Fucus seaweeds on a sandy/gravelly beach in Reykjavik. The beach was in a little bay near the Videy ferry terminal.

Notes:

This little one didn't seem to mind me and allowed me to get reasonably close before he would scuttle away. He was more interested in finding food in the rock pools forming on the beach! We stopped in this little bay while waiting to go to Videy Island, I'm glad we did as we found a few waders here.
