Large Milkweed Bug

Description:

Family: Lygaeidae. Adults and nymphs - Medium-sized hemipteran (true bug) Red/orange and black. Adult size: 18 mm, Nymph size: 6.35 mm. Mouth: Rostrum - long sucking mouth part to feed on plant juices and seeds. Feeds mostly on Milkweed.

Habitat:

Open woodlands where milkweed was abundant near the Appalachian Trail. Range: USA east of the Rocky Mountains and north to Ontario Canada. More abundant in Southeast USA.
