38–45 cm; 100–170 g A fairly small hornbill with a rather short, red bill. White-spotted wing coverts, pale face and white (not brown) throat are diagnostic, apart from very similar Damara Hornbill in n Namibia. Told from Damara Hornbill by its brown-streaked (not white) facial feathers and pale yellow (not brown) eyes. Male has black patch at base of lower mandible; female has smaller, all-red bill. Juv. has grey eyes, a smaller, orange bill with a black patch at the base, and buff (not white) spotting on the back and wing coverts. Voice: A long series of ‘kuk kuk kuk' calls, becoming faster and louder, ending with double notes ‘kuk-we kuk-we'. Does not raise its wings during its display. Status and biology: Locally common in savanna and semi-arid woodland. (Rooibekneushoringvoël)
