Fiery Skipper

Hylephila phyleus

Description:

These small skippers, about 2.2 cm in length, often hold their hindwings level and the forewings vertical. The males are orange black spots while the females are dark brown with orange spots. The antennae are very short.

Habitat:

I found this skipper in an old field in a city park feeding on goldenrod.

Notes:

I submitted this sighting to Butterflies and Moths of North America (BOMONA) for confirmation of the ID along with those that I got at Project Noah (Thanks, Keith). It is the northernmost sighting of this species according to BOMONA in Minnesota and one of the northernmost in North America. I've included a link to the sighting on BOMONA. You can find the map of sightings at that link.
