Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly (male)

Erythemis simplicicollis

Description:

The adult male has a prunose blue abdomen with a green face and green and blue thorax. They have white claspers. They are fearsome predators, catching butterflies and many other kinds of insects. Typically perches on the ground and is quite unwary, often appears to be following you around. Managed a photo of two of the three that were perching in the shade as the temperature roes past 100.

Habitat:

A city maintained retention pond.

Notes:

Returned to this pond to evaluate the impact of a two consecutive days of aerial spraying for West Nile. Water level in the retention pond is down several inches.
