Papilio polyxenes
Family: Papilionidae, Subfamily: Papilioninae. (3.1-4.3 inches - 8-11 cm Wingspan). Male. Upper wings mostly black with 2 yellow band of yellow spots. Adults feeds on variety of nectar flowers including red clover, milkweed, and thistles as well as Coneflowers (Echinacea) as seen in photos. Hosts: Leaves of plants in parsley family including Queen Anne's lace.
Open fields, meadows, suburbs, roadsides and even deserts. Range: In most places in North America
The only male Black Swallowtail I have seen and photographed. Taken in very bright sunlight. Small bug enjoying coneflowers also.

Thanks, my favorite is the little bug flying around. This photo is so bright taken practically into the sun, but lovely to see a male for the first time.
