Asiatic Rhinoceros Beetle

Oryctes rhinoceros

Description:

Scarabaeidae; Dynastinae; Oryctes rhinoceros (Linnaeus, 1758). ". "The Asiatic rhinoceros beetle, coconut rhinoceros beetle or coconut palm rhinoceros beetle, (Oryctes rhinoceros) is a species of rhinoceros beetle of the family Scarabaeidae." Wikipedia. It is easy to tell that this specimen is a female because the horn is very short, just a small triangle which is sometimes hard to see, whereas the male (not shown here) has a much longer horn.

Habitat:

I spotted this beetle on the concrete floor of our carport This is a frequent occurrence here. There are some coconut palms just outside of our back wall which seem to be host to these beetles. The specimens which land inside our wall are always old and in very poor condition.

Notes:

I picked up this beetle from the floor of the carport. and placed it on a pot plant in our front yard. This was to prevent it from being stepped on and also to give me an opportunity to get some photos. It climbed a few feet up the stem of the plant until it reached a point where it could settle down in peace. I took some photos which do not look very natural and i expect the beetle will stay there until it dies
