Tibicen Sp
Exoskeleton of larval stage of a Cicada species, most likely Genus Tibicen (Annual or Dog Day Cicadas). Brown, wingless, large front claws. The larvae of Cicada live underground and feed on roots and such, sometimes for several years. When it's time for them to become adults, they crawl out of the ground, secure themselves somewhere, and shed the exoskeleton. There is no way to truly tell which species this was from the shed exoskeleton.
Suburban backyard garden.
Found while searching the garden on a bug hunt. My siblings and I used to love finding these when the cicadas came out in the summer. We used to hang them on our shirts and walk around with them. I still love them (and occasionally hang them on my shirt)!
