Shiny Blueberry

Vaccinium myrsinites

Description:

A smallish shrub growing in the oak scrub of the Lyonia Preserve in Deltona, Florida. This one was about 12" tall, tiny leaves that almost looked like plastic. They were indeed shiny! No blooms or berries- apparently they bloom in late winter down here. Berries are so tiny, that, although edible, and quite good (I'm told), it takes a ridiculously large amount of time to gather enough to make even one jar of jam. (I'd just get enough to put in homemade muffins! ). Oooh.. note to self..... lol

Habitat:

Upland Oak Scrub

Notes:

I'd really like to go back when there are berries (If the local Scrub Jays leave any for me....)
