Odonus niger
A blackish blue fish with a lyre-shaped caudal fin, uses its dorsal and anal fins to maneuver. I almost always saw them in large groups, especially in areas with strong currents. Here, you can see some pyramid butterflyfish in the background (I have a spotting I uploaded a while ago of them here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/624...). They are planktivorous fish.
Prefer open waters or reefs with strong currents that bring plankton to them. This picture was taken on a reef that is on the edge of the continental shelf, the open ocean was beside us.
This picture was taken on a field trip to a coral reef research unit on Hoga Island in the Wakatobi National Park, Indonesia. I uploaded the butterflyfish a long time ago, but for some reason never thought to put up a picture that predominantly showed the triggerfish!
