Scrub Turkey

Alectura lathami

Description:

large black bird about the size of a white leghorn chicken with a red and yellow head

Habitat:

lives among the leaf litter of forests although in this case it is in the rarely frequented gully behind the apartment block near swamps and forests and on the coast

Notes:

I apologise for the awful images. It was dusk and I wandered out of the back door where I almost never go in time to see this. It has been driving the neighbours dogs crazy for weeks. The light was low and I was barefoot and had to use long focus. There are a number of new bird voices here, perhaps driven out of forests by the fires to the north earlier in the year

I spoke to some of the other apartment dwellers. It can scratch away as long as it wants, we don't go there much

It's thinking of scratching up a mountain of trouble.
