Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

Grey-blue body with white thin feathers that stick up when fluffed. Grey-brown neck with white thin feathers. The Head has a lot of white with a very long orange sharp beak. Has black eyebrows that stick up over the head. Brown long feet.

Habitat:

Once the water recedes the grass grows tall. A pond at the end of the canal gets separated from the lake and becomes swampy. Lots of bullheads, bottom-feeding fish, and frogs.

Notes:

This one came in the morning and then evening every day to catch fish. It was great to see them catch a rather large bullhead. They ate one but then would fly down the berm to rip the fish and feed it into the bush which makes me think there might have been a nest.
