Common Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis

Description:

One of the most common snakes found in NY. Usually greenish or brown with darker blotches on the sides. Most have a yellow or light colored stripe running from neck to tail. Diet consists of mainly invertebrates and amphibians, but they will also eat fish and rodents.

Notes:

This happens to be the first snake I found this year. (Identified by the scarring on it's back.) I'm glad to see it's still around. I had pulled it out of the road back in April and moved it to a safe place nearby.
