thanks rat.tumour for the ID... Seems the general consensus is Amanita vaginata. Checked with lightworkerpeace and mushroomobserver.org.
Golly, this mushroom ID business is tricky. I looked at both suggestions, and can see bits of this spotting fit into both...
Put it on mushroom observer, and they suggested Amanita also.

Typo correction: Volvariella
I think Amanita is right but check out Volvallaria if that doesn't match.
