Odocoileus virginianus
I heard this pair of deer long before I saw them. They have a strange and almost eerie whistling call. I think it was a mother and her fawn, as it was the right time of year for fawns to lose their spots and both deer had lost their reddish color and taken on the dingier gray-brown of winter.
The white-tailed deer is a woodland species. In North America, the species is most common east of the Rocky Mountains, and is absent from much of the western United States, including Nevada, Utah, California, Hawaii, and Alaska.
