Rhinocheilus lecontei tessellaus
Longnose snakes are tri-colored snakes that vaguely resemble the coral snake. Their colors of red, black, and cream are spotted within each other instead of being defined like a coral snake.
They inhabit dry grasslands in central and the southwestern US, down into Mexico. They spend most of their time underground.
Found in a trap while helping a graduate student check his traps, there were also 3 other longnose in the same trap.

An excellent photo of this beautiful creature. I've never seen one of these before. I do love snakes!!!! Even the nasty ones, and we've got plenty of them here. Look but don't touch with them. Your avatar is amazing. Best wishes for your studies. Neil :-)
