Xestia c-nigrum
This moth has a beautiful design on wings that looks like a wooden carving. The forewings of this species are reddish-brown with distinctive patterning towards the base; a black mark resembling the Hebrew letter nun (נ) with a pale cream-coloured area adjacent to this mark. I don't know the moths of India but this looks like a Setaceous Hebrew character (Xestia c-nigrum). I think it may occur in India. Here's a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setaceous_H...
