Thanks, Michael, that does narrow it down.

The subfamily is Lixinae, tribe Cleonini. There are still around 100 genera and maybe something over 1000 species, but it's more precise than just "a weevil". If you really need a precise ID, the specialist to ask would be Massimo Meregalli, at the University of Torino, Italy.

Don't give up!! Sometimes we some hightlights on Project Noah and we have a lot of good people here ;-)...

Thanks. I think that getting a specific ID on this is very unlikely - I see there are over 400 genera including 40 000 species of "true weevils" (Curculionidae)!

It is for sure a weevil, but I do not now which one and which subfamily. The weevils are to my knowledge the largest family of beetles and insects (?), so ID might be tricky. In RSA you always should consider pests from outside, so Europe and Australasia, which make it not easier.

KateBraun 10 years ago

Thanks! It does look like it's probably one of the weevils.

Subfamily might be Entiminae, but I am not 100% sure, just a hint.

Curculionidae, Weevil I would say and reminds me somehow of a Broad-nosed or Broad-snouted Weevil. Maybe you find something in pests or pest control. These weevils are sometimes a real plaque.
