Trans-pecos Copperhead

Agkistrodon contortrix pictigaster

Description:

The Trans-pecos Copperhead is a light brown color, with darker brown bands all down the body. The noticeable difference that separates this subspecies out from the others is the elaborately patterned belly.

Habitat:

This subspecies is found in Western Texas and Northern Mexico. This subspecies prefers rocky, lightly vegetated canyon areas. This is very different from other copperhead subspecies because most copperheads prefer oak habitats where they blend in perfectly.
