A medium sized owl with dark eyes and lacking tuffs on the head. Distinctive barring pattern on the breast and belly give it its name.
This species is usually found in deep woodlands. They tend to shy away from habitat containing great horned owl's, due to competition. This species is Crepuscular, meaning that it is most active during dusk and dawn.
This individual is Juno the barred owl at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center and Glen Ellen, Illinois. She was struck by a vehicle and has permanent vision impairment. She is an education raptor.
