American Avocet

Recurvirostra americana

Description:

To feed they swing their bills back and forth to catch invertebrates. They have the winter plumage with their heads being gray. During breeding season adult heads are a rusty color. The body is white and wings are black and white. They have dark, long, upturned bills and long light colored legs.

Habitat:

At the end of Graveyard Slough on Lake Lewisville. this is the second one to fly in to feed on its fall migration.

Graveyard Slough is a very sheltered cove. They seemed content as long as we were on the opposite side of the cove. I love migration time.
