A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Glechoma hederacea
Like many other invasive species, Creeping Charlie originated in Europe and spread throughout the US and can be find almost everywhere except for cold, northern climates. Creeping Charlie is known by my other common names such as gill-over-the-ground or ground ivy, but no matter what it is referred to as most home owners and gardeners find Creeping Charlie to be a persistent nuisance. People in other countries though consider it a palatable green and it was once used in the process to brew beer before hops became popular. It also has been used for medicine to treat urinary tract infections due to its diuretic properties.
Creeping Charlie is often found in shady habitats and has been know to aggressively take over wild areas and take over native plant's habitats.
I found this specimen under a tree in an open pasture and is surrounded by dove foot geranium on the right and wood sorrel on the left. Elizabeth Green
